My brother has been a Summershiner for 3 summers at Cape Hatteras KOA and he absolutely LOVES it!
What are KOA Summershiners?
- KOA Kampgrounds are located all over the United States. The locations listed above, are the locations that the Summershiners work at. Summershiners are young people, ages 17-27, in campground ministry. They work at either of these 3 campgrounds during the summer. They are basically a ministry team that leads a chapel every sunday morning, "saturday night live", and various activites for kids that are camping at the campground.
Summershiners do not just have fun, but they do have to work too. They work very hard around the campground cleaning bathrooms, showers, the pool, and anything else needed to be cleaned. They also have to mow the campground and do heavy duty stuff. They also work in the giftshop. You will also have to work in the cafe and cook some. You have to be willing to work hard, 8 or more hours a day! But the experience is incredible!
Aside from working, the summershiners do get to minister to the people staying at the campground. They provide various activites such as bonfires on the beach, fiesta siesta, summerfest, kids are special weekend, all american week, wet and wild weekend, clowning around weekend, christmas in july, olympic days, volleyball and basketball tournaments, beach softball, face painting, tie-die, bead jewelry, game shows, ice cream socials, etc. This means A LOT to the kids on the campground. They love these activities and it's a great opportunity for you to witness and glorify God.
"I count my Summershine experience as one of the most important and fun periods of my life. It served as a greenhouse for my faith. God grew me up in the midst of Christian friendship even as He worked through me to minister to others. I highly recommend it to all!" - Denise -
"These Summershine summers changed my life! I was proud to be selected to serve on this staff." - Keith -
"The lifeskills I received in Summershine with people, witnessing, and helping others set the stage for my career working with people everyday." - JJ -
"We had the privelage of working on Summershine for 4 summers. The relationships we formed with each other, campers, and staff has had a lasting impact on our lives. Good preparation for our ministry today!" - Chris and Beverly -
"When I saw how the Summershiners were all on fire for the Lord, I wanted to be like that!" - Paige, a teenager who camped at the campground telling the Summershiners why she was applying to become a Summershiner. -
